The University of Malaga, together with the Provincial Council and the highest representatives of Rincón de la Victoria and Torrox Town Councils presented the University Championships to be held in September 2023.
The European Universities Beach Championships Malaga 2023 has been presented at the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) that took place in Madrid, the capital of Spain. From the Costa del Sol Tourism stand, the President of the Provincial Council of Malaga and Mayor of Rincón de la Victoria, Francisco Salado, as host of the presentation, congratulated the University of Malaga for the awarding of the Championship and thanked the two coastal municipalities of Malaga for the assignment of the international event. The Vice-Rector for Sports of the University of Malaga, Emilio Fernández Rodríguez, also thanked the Provincial Council and the local councils for their invaluable collaboration. The presentation was also attended by the Mayor of Torrox, Óscar Medina, the Provincial Councillor for Sports, Cristóbal Ortega, the Councillor for Sports and Tourism of Rincón de la Victoria, Antonio José Martín and the Councillor for Sports and Youth of Torrox, José Manuel Fernández.
Between 18th and 25th September 2023, Malaga will host 440 athletes divided into 72 teams representing more than 40 European universities from over 30 different countries. In addition, there will be 100 volunteers, 25 of whom will come from other countries thanks to the Erasmus+ project.
During the presentation at FITUR, Emilio Fernández explained that this is the first time that this competition will be held "which we are facing as a challenge and which we are sure we are going to take forward to give way to future projects of this type of beach championships". For his part, Francisco Salado highlighted the "quality sport and high competition in this province" and thanked "the organising bodies, such as the National Sports Council, the Regional Government of Andalusia, the Provincial Council of Malaga, the Intercambia Youth Association, the Spanish and Andalusian Volleyball and Handball Federations [...], who make it possible for this to become a reality". The Mayor of Rincon also wanted to thank the Rugby Federation, as Beach Rugby will also be present during the championship as an exhibition sport. On the other hand, the mayor of Torrox thanked the University of Malaga for "being able to celebrate this important event that together with the effort and impetus of the Sports Councils of both municipalities put in value the Eastern Costa del Sol".
The Provincial Council is working together with these two towns that are committed to sport as part of their tourism programmes. Their fantastic beaches will witness the fulfilment of the Strategic Plan of the University of Malaga in terms of internationalisation through sport.
