Volunteers welcome at the University of Malaga

THE RECEPTION OF THE INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEERS IS THE STARTING POINT OF THE 1ST EUROPEAN UNIVERSITES BEACH SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIP MALAGA 2023.

The University of Malaga is organising the most important University Beach Sports event in the world.

Thanks to the Erasmus + international volunteering programme granted to the organisation of these championships, a total of 44 young people living in EU countries, between 18 and 30 years old, will carry out their voluntary work during the Championship. The countries of origin of the volunteers are Greece, Poland, Italy, Cyprus, Italy, Turkey and Romania. They will be joined by another 100 local volunteers throughout the Championship.

Asociación Juvenil Intercambia (Intercambia Youth Association), at the request of the University of Malaga, presented the project to the Spanish National Agency for Volunteering, which was approved and has allowed the presence of a large number of European volunteers. Their work will provide invaluable support to the organisation of the 1st European Universities Beach Sports Championships to be held in two venues: Rincón de la Victoria, from 20th to 24th September and in Torrox from 21st to 23rd September 2023 organised by the University of Malaga.

The welcome ceremony was presented by Raquel del Río, Deputy Vice-President of the Organising Committee and was attended by Emilio Fernández, Vice-Rector for sport and President of the Organising Committee, who was accompanied by Mercedes Martín, Councillor for Youth of Málaga City Council, Pedro Ramírez from the Andalusian Youth Institute of the Andalusian Regional Government and the Vice-President of the Organising Committee, Hilario Sánchez. Immediately after the welcoming ceremony, the volunteers began their work in support of the Championships, receiving information about the Championship and being assigned their tasks.

The approved programme covers the volunteers' travel, food and transport costs, which makes it a great attraction for young people from all over Europe. In addition to supporting the tasks involved in the organisation of the Championship, the volunteers will promote environmental values and health improvement through the practice of beach sports activities in schools in the province of Malaga.

Numerous public and private entities will participate in this great international sporting event in addition to the University, such as Diputación Provincial de Málaga (Provincial Council of Malaga), the Town Councils of Rincon de la Victoria and Torrox, Junta de Andalucía (Andalusian Regional Government) and Consejo Superior de Deportes (National Sports Council).

The European Solidarity Corps is an unpaid solidarity activity, which is carried out for a period of up to 12 months. It provides young people with the opportunity to contribute to the daily work of organisations in activities that have an impact on the well-being of the communities where they are carried out.

More than 300 university athletes representing 48 universities from 21 countries will take part in the championship, which starts next week, making it a great success in terms of participation.

All the information about the Championships can be followed on the website and in streaming.
